These sundials are practically the anchestors of the pocket watches. Couple of centuries ago when the mechanical watches weren't available these sundials were owned by weathly men. When opened, the local time can be determined very quickly. A built-in small compass helps to hold the sundial in the correct position.
The sundials can be used to detemine the exact local time. Even for today's people it is interesting to check the time based on the movement on our daylight star.
